Marta had wished for his demise many times, but she caught the Render before he hit. She deposited him back on his feet as the ten glassmen guards surrounded them.
ââAlas, I awoke, tears stinging my face,ââ Graff whispered. ââFor I knew the way of things, the way things end.ââ
Marta knew the line but had little time to ponder its meaning as the glassmen attacked. She and Graff fought back-to-back, brutality their only strategy. Unlike Quooro, these ten were soldiers and moved to surround, then overwhelm the two. They still came no higher than her inhuman waist, and Marta wanted to wade through the impediments to attend to her daughter, but the clarity that came with her rage reminded her these soldiers fought together and would bring her down like a pack of dogs. She clung close to the Render and swiped at any that came too near. They tried to draw her off with their feints, and she feared she would give in if they kept her from Caddie much longer.
Graff made the first kill by drawing a glassmanâs Breath and severing it with the remains of his dagger. The jagged glass still cut just as well as when whole, and Graff went to work with his Weaving the moment the dead glassman released his dozen Breaths. Two manifestations attacked before the glassmen could close rank, peeling off another glassman before they recovered and tore the crude constructions apart with their bare hands.
Marta gutted a glassman in the melee, spilling both his organs and Breath. This earned them another break in the closing formation, with Marta and Graff instinctively pressing closer to the royal tower. Recognizing their aim, the bodyguards abandoned their circle to form a wall of inhuman flesh between them.
Graff reacted at once, drawing the Breath of the dead glassman and twirling them into strands of three. He gave these no shape, no consciousness, and instead hurled them like musket balls. Huge chunks of flesh tore free from their adversaries as the Render drew his projectiles back to him to perforate his enemies anew.
The glassmen fell back, their gaping wounds closing as Graff raked them again. He could not kill them with his makeshift bullets, but each Breath they exhaled to heal gave him more ammunition. The Render never stopped moving, gesturing out and in repeatedly. As he did, Marta realized how much Weaving looked like the Renderâs drawing.
Finally close enough to the central tower, Marta pounced upon the closest glassman and bit his head off with her maw. She shook his body like a dog with a rat before her claws tore into the tower stones to ascend.
She made it only a few pulls up before four glassmen clung to her. Their weight and blows did little to hamper her, but they worked in tandem to dislodge her claws. Reaching around with an Armored arm, she caught one and squeezed until red ran through her daemonic fingers. The three others increased their abuse, but she continued her climb.
